The latest version of US company Geoforce’s GT1 Satellite GPS tracking device has received IECEx/ATEX Zone 0 certification, making it the world's first satellite tracking device with that rating.

The device is now approved to operate safely for unlimited periods of time, even in the most explosive environments found in oil and gas exploration and production.

The certification meets the standards of ATEX (Apparatus for use in Explosive atmospheres) in Europe, as well as IECEx (the International Electrotechnical Commission system for certification to standards relating to equipment for use in Explosive atmospheres). According to Geoforce, governing bodies in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia have added their endorsement.

The device also is certified to meet more than 40 other specific global standards for intrinsic safety, electronics and radio compliance as well as environmental compliance.

"Gaining Zone 0 certification has never been achieved before for a satellite tracking device – and the standards were daunting," said Brandon Taylor, Chief Hardware Architect at Geoforce.

“Achieving IECEx/ATEX Zone 0 rating is the culmination of an effort that lasted more than two years. But the effort was worth it to provide our customers a single tracking device which is certified to operate safely for unlimited periods in any oil and gas operating environment for global operation."

The certification will be audited annually by the IECEx/ATEX certification organizations.

Track and trace equipment is used in a number of challenging environments in the oil and gas industry. Geoforce is headquartered near Dallas/Fort Worth, with Geoforce do Brasil being located in Macae, Brazil.
